Great Bakery Smile May 25, 2013

Categories : Taiwan | Bakery | Bubble Milk Tea/Juice

Somehow, Prince Edward gets all of the good bakery options. I used to go to Ueno Bakery a few minutes away on Nathan Road until I found that 85C had opened across from Pioneer Centre.

For those that don't know 85C, it's a large coffee chain in Taiwan which first became famous for providing good quality coffee and cake at low prices.

We try a few different bread each time and so far, none have disappointed:

Hokkaido Dome - Available in other places in Hong Kong. Not too sweet with reasonably dense bread (a lot of places have domes that are too fluffy and empty). Decent.

Whole Wheat Toast - For some reason, most bakeries in HK use margarine (probably to save costs). 85C uses butter and the taste is much much better than other bakeries. The bread was fluffy but not chewy and didn't leave an aftertaste. Probably on-par with Little Mermaid, but only half the price.

Cream-filled french horn bread - While the horn bread is bland like a thin-crust baguette, the sweet and smooth cream and sugar crystals create a perfect mix of textures and flavors. It's a bit messy to eat, so be careful if you're trying to maintain an image lol

There are also a few tables in the back corner if you want to get a drink and have a cake. Haven't tried that yet but will soon!

Tasty but slightly pricey Smile Apr 23, 2013

Categories : Vietnamese | Noodles/Rice Noodles

Noodlemi occupies a tiny space across the street from Cosco Tower. With seating only for around 12 people, you'll want to get there before 12:15 or after 1 pm.

The beef pho was tasty with a generous portion of beef and tasty stock. For those used to other Vietnamese places, the lack of MSG is apparent in that the stock isn't as "sweet". If you like noodle stock tasting like what you'd make at home, this is the place to come. Otherwise, there's Pho Tai across the street.

The lemongrass chicken banh mi was tasty, but not particularly traditional and not a very large portion either. The chicken had a touch of lemongrass flavor and was tender to eat. I think it could have used more pickled vegetables, but not bad overall.

At ~55 HKD per dish, Noodlemi is a bit pricey for Sheung Wan, especially given the relatively light portion sizes. I recommend that 2 people order 2 mains + a starter.

Categories : Guangdong | Chinese Restaurant | Dim Sum

This is our second attempt at eating here. The first time, we were deterred by the 45min+ wait. This time, after hearing about the 30min+ wait (at 2pm on a Sunday!), we decided to order to-go and took the food down the street to the nearby park to enjoy the sun.

If you can handle the wait, what makes this place stand out is that the dim sum isn't loaded with salt or MSG, allowing you to taste the real flavor of the ingredients and not leaving you thirsty afterwards. However, for those used to other dim sum places, it may seem that the dishes aren't as flavorful.

6 dishes for 2 people came to just under HKD 100 and left us satisfied, but not particularly full. The portions aren't huge, but good value for the price. 2 people can consider ordering 8 dishes if you're hungry (fewer if you get rice)

义燒焗餐包 (BBQ Pork-filled Dinner Rolls) - Ok. Roll was excellent, filling wasn't too sweet, but had very little BBQ pork.
菜苗餃 (Dumping with Greens and Shrimp) - Excellent. Full of green vegetables and plump shrimp.
燒賣 (Shiu Mai) - Very Good. Made with chunks of lean pork (no fatty/gristle bits)
咖喱鮮魷魚 (Curried Squid) - Very good. Light curry flavor without being overpowering or too salty. The squid had excellent texture.
雞絲滑粉卷 (Chicken wrapped in rice roll) - Excellent. Not a particularly common dish. A bit like a steamed spring roll. Chicken and vegetables wrapped in a rice flour sheet. The wrapping was just the right thickness and lots of filling.
馬拉糕 (Ma la gou) - Excellent. Decent size portion. Not too sweet or dry.

This place gives the original Tim Ho Wan some serious competition (and the seating isn't as cramped). Will definitely come by again if I'm in the area.

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

Tsukiji is located at the opposite end of Gage Street from the escalator. Lunch "sets" (basically a main + soup) are very reasonably priced for Japanese food, coming in under $70.

The food is decent, although seating is very tight, with the tables just wide enough for 2 bento boxes. If you're with average-sized dining mates, you're likely to be knee to knee and shoulder to shoulder, so go with people you don't mind getting sitting closely with tongue.

The food came super-fast, just a few min after ordering, which makes you wonder a bit about how they made it. However, what was supposed to be warm was warm and cold, cold, so no real issues there.

Bento box with beef - 3 thick slices of salmon sashimi, stir fried vegetables, fruit and rice topper with stir fried beef. Tasty, but not a big portion.

Tsukiji Rice Bowl - Decent variety of sashimi, egg and imitation crab over vinegar rice, with a small dish of marinated seafood. Again, not bad, but there could have been a bit more sashimi (the 4 largest pieces were imitation crab and egg).

Not a bad choice if you're in the area, but not worth a dedicated trip.

Tasty Korean Basics Smile Mar 25, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Korean | Fast Food

Seating is pretty limited at Hungry Korean, so they've implemented a semi-cafeteria style arrangement. The process is:
1)Order and pay
2)Sit at your assigned seats
3)Wait for them to bring the food
4)Eat and leave

The menu is pretty short which makes the ordering process a bit easier and oddly enough, most of the staff do not speak Cantonese.

We got
-Squid bibimbap - Good sized portion for the price

-Korean sushi with beef - Tasty but the seaweed was oily on the outside

-Spicy rice cake - Portion was relatively small but pretty good

Overall, not a bad place to get a quick bite to eat, but not a place where you can linger for a conversation.
