水佬魚湯 Smile Feb 04, 2013  (Related Review)

Went there again last Thursday with The She Who Must Be Obeyed.

I only want to write about 水佬魚湯 on this occasion, as it is a rather interesting experience.

I don't like fish soup but The She likes it very much. However, to my surprise, the soup is great, not 腥. The interesting thing is the fish. I expected that the fish would be in the soup, or would be sliced for hot pot, but in fact, the fish was steamed and separately served. The quality of the fish was good anyway.

When we left, the boss also gave us 暖包. This time, I found the toilet, which is in the dinning area of 堅火鍋 next to the shop itself.

Again, we spent about $300 each, including beer.

Very nice hot pot Smile Jan 17, 2013

Went there twice within a week. First with The She Who Must Be Obeyed only. The second time went there with The She Junior as well.

The service was very nice. 老闆娘(I think she is 老闆娘) is heavily pregnant. Yet, she has been very busy treating patrons with hearts and passion.

The first time we ordered a small pot of 胡椒豬肚鍋, which had strong taste of pepper and was extremely tasty. Quite sure no MSG in there. Everytime when the pot was refilled, it was refilled with the same soup, rather than water.

Food was fresh, especially seafood. The second time we ordered a seafood boat (at $300 something) with a small lobster. The lobster was freshly killed and was still moving when it was served (although I did not enjoy the scene). We also ordered 螺 and fresh squid, again a must try (seems to be $68 each). The vegetable was fresh as well.

For me, the most surprising treat is the supply of Tetley. More importantly, only $32/pint.

The shop is small which can only hold a few tables (about 30 peope in total). Yet, the seat are not very crowded. The patrons are also seem to be 斯文人. I have not heard of any foul languages during the two visits. The only problem, as I see it, is that I could not find the toilet, which is quite devastating after a few pints.

The overall impression is great. The price is slightly above average but definitely, the shop is a much better place than 骨王。

On average, we spent about $300 per head, including about $100 for beer.

Will never go again Cries Aug 25, 2011

I do not know why this comment was not allowed to be published. All I know is that numerous published reports concern how bad was a particular place, which was so bad that the authors left without patronising the place and thus the reports containing nothing about food. Certainly, I respect authority of this forum in allowing or disallowing someone to write something.

Went there to have a drink after dinner with a friend whom I have not met for more than 20 years together with 2 other friends.

We chosed this place but it turned out to be a bad choice.

Apart from a friend who needed to drive and ordered 2 glasses of virgin colada during our 3 hours stay, all of us ordered Guinness Stout, a total of 7 bottles. As Guinness is bottled drink, they all taste the same and I have no comment. I am not interested to taste my friend's virgin colada.

Guess how much we ended up to pay? $660!!! It is more expensive than Dickens in Excelsior!!!

Patrons in the bar keep smoking cigarettes.

Will never come to this place again.

A friend of mine invited my family for dinner at this place. It turned out that there was something more than dinner, but that is another story...

Anyway, I was busily engaging in something else, and took no part in chosing my dish, or even had a look on the menu. The She Who Must be Obeyed made all the decisions for me and ordered roast suckling pig for me.

I must confess that I don't know roast suckling pig is also part of the Italian cuisine. From the size of the pig, it must be indeed a very little suckling pig (and I feel really sorry for the little piggie....). It is very different from the Chinese style for sure. There is no seasoning at the inside of the pig. Beside, the meat is much joicy than the Chinese style. The skin is thin and crispy, and similar to the "glass skin" of the Chinese style. It tasted a lot of lighter than the Chinese style.

A waitress waited our table. She knew the menu well, and was able to switch to Putonghua channel immediately when she found out that one of us is a mainland putonghua speaking person. She showed a little impatient when the mainland friends asked for something "unusual" for a western restaurant but yet, she had nevertheless tried to accommodate the mainland friends. As other top-end western restaurant, she also came and asked for our comments after we finished our dinner. She told us that the restaurant may stop serving suckling pig as the restaurant may review its menu.

As I was not paying, I don't know how much, but I don't think it will be cheap...

A nice restaurant Smile Aug 12, 2011

My family and two other families went to this place for lunch. We have altogether 4 adults and 5 kids. We came in at tea time, but we were so hungry that we all ordered lunch sets. Most of them ranged from $40 to $50. I have ordered cold soba with deep fried fish fingers. The appearance of the soba was great. One could see that the chef was serious in preparing his food. The soba was great, chewy and not soggy, chilled on ice in a bowl, with the sauce served in another bowl with ice as well. However, the sauce was not soba source. It was rather like diluted soybean sauce. The noodle came as a great relief for the hot summer day. We ended up spending something like $360.

The service is fine.
