Take out only Just OK Feb 09, 2011

Categories : Western | Vegetarian | Light / Healthy Food

There are just so many things I didn't like about this restaurant that I had to make a list, but I had to give it an "OK" still coz the food was actually good and that's why I would recommend take out instead.

Dislikes:
1) So stuffy, the small restuarant is so poorly ventilated that all you breath in is stale air from the frying (you will still be a walking cooking range hood when you leave the resto)
2) 2 green menus for 2 people, turns out only ONE side is the same.....the other side is different?!!??
3) 2 other menus in case you are not confused enough.....
4) They don't care to tell you what they don't have until after you order, and they actually don't have basic things like spaghetti
5) Chalkboard menu placed strategically, all in corners where you won't be able to see them
6) Huge plates on small tables, love the huge portions, but no place for utensils or drinks, be ready for spills
7) Tables of 2 setup in groups of 3, unfortunately we were at the outside end so we kept having food and arms swinging in front of our faces
8) Dessert Chalkboard menu is written with "permanent" chalk, out of the 6 items they only make 2 (pls refer to item 4)
9) They can't wait for you leave, when they pass you your coffee, they also hand you the bill, there's no service charge for a reason

Like:
Food was good

Soup-Pumpkin and Ginger soup, they make sure you know it's healthy as they leave lots of bite size ginger pieces and roots
Bolognaise Penne-delicious, wheaty pasty and sauce was tasty
Beef stew with mushroom and rice-Beef was super tender, mushroom perfectly cooked, rice also good texture

All this healthy organic feel-good food was completely offset by the stale and oily cooking smell fuming all around you and very cramped environment.

Was a real struggle for me to give the OK if not for the taste of the food....

Hotel quality Smile Feb 06, 2011

Celebrated Uncle's Bday here. The restaurant was very spacious and felt like a chinese restuarant in a hotel.
Food overall was good, ingredients were fresh and service was friendly. There was a good variety on the menu and prices were very reasonable.

We had:
Daily soup - pretty good
Pomelo with shrimp roe - not the best I have had, a bit on the salty side but good
Shrimp Toast - my favorite, done perfectly
Chinese cabbage and vermicelli - very well done, not watery or oily
Sweet and Sour Shrimp - ok quite good
Bitter gourd and fermented black beans - i don't like bitter gourd but everyone was raving about it
Soy Sauce chicken - a bit on the salty side but the chicken itself was done just right, think i would try the salt baked chicken next time
Osmanthus Pear Dessert - yummy
Lemon Chestnut Dessert - yummy

This resto really felt like a hotel, hotel decor, hotel quality food and hotel service. Value for money but portions could be bigger. They have several humongous tables like for groups of 20! Parking is available in the buildins and they validate for 2 hours. Manageress told us they are quite popular during weekdays for dimsum at lunch. Would totally like to try.

Overrated and Yucky Cries Jan 29, 2011

Categories : Japanese | Ramen

I cant believe yucky ramen exists. More so, I can't believe I waited 1.5hrs for yucky ramen shocked
I had the original flavor and added additonal pork which in hindsight was not necessary because there's plenty already, nevermind that it's nothing to write home about, it was tender though, I have to give them that.

The yucky part for me was broth being so oily and thick, was like dipping noodles into a miso lard despite already choosing the lightest broth. The yucky miso paste totally ruined the noodles and the pork, and ultimately my appetite which made me even skip dinner that night.

I can't understand what the hype was all about given the oily broth and tasteless/non-chewy ramen and I completely regret lining up for it.
Have to give them credit for the friendly service and handling of long lines though, but I just can't help remembering how bad it was.
My worst bowl of ramen ever. sad

We had to book 2 months ahead for our table, and all this time I was wondering what the wait was all about. Turns out the place is small, fits about 20 people and they only have 1 seating each night. But I think in hindsight, mostly because the food is damn good.

The monthly menus are structured and themed. We were so lucky as December's was "Best of 2010", which means we got a taste of all the previous menus. The set course starts with amuse bouche, soup and salad, a plate of carbs, something from sea, something from land, a sorbet palate cleanser, dessert and a macaroon inspired by candy bars. Just this structure itself makes me happy as I know I am going to have a very satisfying meal lol

Amuse Bouche of pork and diakon - amazing taste and an impressive start
Alphabet Tomato soup & Sloppy Joe made with wagyu beef - so yum, I could eat this everyday!
Bacon & Egg Risotto - impressive presentation of the poached egg but I am not a big fan of truffle oil so this was just ok for me
Scallop and Clams in saffron broth and cauliflower custard - huge scallop! and really amazing cauliflower custard
Flank Steak - amazed at how tender the flank steak was, I was expecting a much tougher steak
Green Apple Sorbet with Hoegaarden Beer - genius!
Apple Cake with salted caramel ice cream - OUT OF THIS WORLD, best dessert I have EVER had...so evil...the portions need to be much much bigger!
"Twix" macaroon sandwich - peanut butter ice cream, chocolate ganache and caramel, what a great finish

I was so stuffed by the end but so happy and just couldn't stop thinking about the apple cake and how impressed I was with the menu and unpretentious food. Service was excellent, everyone was really friendly. Chef was highly attentive and presented each course.
(Noted: Openrice map misleading, the restuarant is actually across The Wheel near the escalators.)

Don't bother Cries Nov 01, 2010

I was expecting great wok fried dishes from this place after write ups from some magazines, but instead it was just bad food and rude service (or no service) all around. I love hole in the wall places but this "restaurant" seemed more like a mahjong house with dinner tables in the middle. It was quite noisy when we were there especially when a lot of the MJ room doors were open. We asked if we could be seated by the windows instead and the waitress compared our request to changing channels on their tv, she said we never change the channel on our tv either.....WHAT? what does that have to do with anything??

Daily soup - ok, nothing special
Pepper Ribs - taste was ok, again nothing to write home about
Chinese doughnut stuffed with fishball meat - idea sounded great but turned out to be a very overcooked doughnut
Wasabi salad dressing prawn and cucumbers - I just didn't like this dish at all, 1 prawn was ok after 2...ugh
Crab steamed in lotus leave and sticky rice - the crab was ok, the sticky rice tasted of the bamboo steamer they steamed in...instead of the leaf
Crab roe vegetables - ok
Chicken - this actually tasted good if the chicken meat itself wasn't tough like cardboard
Sea cucumber pot - ok

Didn't even bother to take photos as overall experience unpleasant. I give this place 3 cries. 2 for the rude staff and 1 for the food. Luckily the dishes came really quickly as I wanted to leave asap. Don't bother.
