Hi! Originally from England I chose to live in Hong Kong because I love this city, especially the great food you can get here. I love discovering new restaurants and trying different kinds of food. I w…

This place sits with its big windows glowing on the second floor of a building next to the Mid-Levels escalator and I'd noticed it many times when passing by on my way up. It advertises itself as offering quick pasta and drinks in a cafe style setting. The other night around 7pm, I wanted a quick bite before heading on somewhere else and thought that this might be exactly what I was looking for. I clambered up the stairs into the large interior, all white and brightly lit by clinical w...

There are surprisingly few proper yakitori restaurants in Hong Kong. Places like Sapporo Ramen and Watami offer it as well as other things, and others do full on barbecue, but there’s not many dedicated to the little barbecued skewers. Which is why I was so eager to try Jun Yakitori when I read it was one of the best yakitori restaurants in the city. The restaurant feels like one of those hidden backstreet restaurants you get in Tokyo. Entering through swinging wooden door...

The large dining room of Hunan Gardens looks impressively grand and historical, with wood paneled walls bearing large oil paintings, white pillars, and big chandeliers hanging down from the ceiling above. It's all fake, of course. The restaurant's actually high up in the anonymous, modern sleekness of one of Times Square's towers. But once sat at one of the elegantly laid tables, it's not too hard to suspend disbelief and feel you are actually in a magnificent colonial mansion....

I apologise to anyone expecting a real review of this place. I didn’t actually eat there. Because the restaurant was full, we were brusquely ushered to a table right in front of the door. I was given a couple of menus, covered in finely embroidered Chinese style cloth. I looked down the list of items, fairly standard Sichuan things given elaborateness in their English translations. Then I saw the prices! Dan dan mihn was about $98, while a lot of the other dishes were way up ...

"I was excited to spot this place hidden in the back streets below the hulk of The Belchers. Hong Kong has so few Nepalese places that it’s always good to have another one, plus the humble front of this place made me optimistic it might be reasonably authentic. But things quickly began to disappoint. First, I noticed they offered Spanish Tapas alongside Nepalese food in what I could only take as an attempt to cash in on two markets. Then, the menu felt disappointingly limit...

This is a good value sichuan restaurant in North Point that doesn't offer the best example s of this kind of food in the city but also doesn't cost as much as many of the private kitchens Mum Chau's of Sijjie which do. Its easily possible to have a meal here for under HK$100 each and there are big bottles of Chinese beer for HK$10. chopstickThe dan dan mihn came in a huge bowl and was excellent value for HK $18 – a meal on its own. The noodles, although not home made, ha...

This small restaurant is definitely one of the best places I’ve been to in Hong Kong for Donburi. You can get other Japanese food here too, but their speciality seems to be tuna dishes such as negitoro (minced tuna over rice) and the tekkadon (thin sliced tuna over rice). You could stick to these without ever being disappointed. I went for the lightly seared tuna (Circa HK$100) and was really struck by how they handled the fish to bring out all its qualities. It was...

Yu-raku was recommended to me by a Japanese friend and is one of the only places in Hong Kong I know of that does Okonomiyaki, a kind of Japanese egg pancake. Slide open the door of this tiny restaurant and your only option is to sit by counter which stretches along the side. Perched on a stool here, you can watch the chef fry different ingredients on the hot plate in front of you and breathe in the different smells until you are drooling with hunger. We began with the standard ok...

Western style breakfasts tend to be pretty expensive in Hong Kong, with Cafe O’s clocking in at around $80 and other places even higher. This makes it hard to justify going for breakfast / brunch often like you might in the US. But Cafe Little is out to change all of that. It offers a range of breakfast sets, none of which come to more than about $30 for the food and coffee. This small cafe on Hillier Street in Sheung Wan has a great retro feel, with plastic chairs a...

I was a bit uncertain about Shanghai Lane as we walked in. The large black and white photos of Old Shanghai, the neat soy sauce pots on each table, and the smartly uniformed waiters all felt very packaged. I imagined other identical restaurants being set up by the company across the city and feared the food would taste equally indistinct. Overall though, while not that remarkable, the restaurant offered solid Shanghai food at lower prices. chopstickThe ‘braised pork belly with bean cur...
