2046 restaurant  Just OK May 16, 2009

It is interesting how many people still remember this was the restaurant where the movie 2046 was shot on location. The fact that there is a huge poster of the movie on the wall adds to the nostalgia.

We went there for lunch today and I had the lunch set, which comprised : a Bosch soup, which is a must try of this restaurant. It is my view that few restaurants in Hong Kong can still manage to make this "east meets west" soup. The fish cutlet with some kind of cream soup followed was also good. The main course which i selected was a so called "Mignon" steak, with lots of sauce. Although the taste was average, at least the meat was tender. The dessert was ice cream with some canned fruits, followed by coffee or tea.

All in all, not a bad place for a quick meal. The service was efficient and friendly.

Nice food but slow service Just OK May 03, 2009

This is an interesting little restaurant on Hanoi Road , with a friendly relaxed atmosphere. We went there at 9pm on a week night for a late dinner. The place was almost full and we found a table in the back near the corner.

There were a nice selection of tapas on the menu, and we ordered a sausage and a fried fried calamari. For main course, we ordered two pasta dishes, a spaghetti with salami strip and the other with shrimp. We found the quality of food very good, the pastas cooked just right and the sauce tasty.

The service however was extremely slow. The first main dish came in about 15 minutes after we ordered, then we had to wait another 20 minutes for the next pasta dish. The tapas came last when we had already finished the spaghetti.

Another major complaint we had was that there was an unpleasant smell in the air perhaps because our table was near the entrance that led to the toilet.

Nice and Quiet Ambiance Smile Mar 31, 2009

We ran into this new place at Regal Hotel yesterday and went in to give it a try. The restaurant was almost empty when we walked in at noon. The decor was nice and modern and bright, and we picked a table by the bay window where we could watch pedestrians walk along the quiet road.

The restaurant was promoting a buffet (35% off the regular price of $148 per person) so our party of 4 decided to have the buffet. There were a variety of Vietnamese salads most of which were sour and spicy. There was also a Tong Yum soup which was quiet good.

The buffet came with one main dish per person which could be ordered from the buffet menu, and we ordered a Hainan chicken (which was crap), a fried vegetable (average), a char grilled pork (very good) and a curry (average).

Choices of desserts are somewhat limited: there were fruits and 3 of 4 kinds of Vietnamese cakes.

The service was excellent and all the servers were attentive and courteous.

The restaurant also offered a 2 hour complimentary parking in the basement parking lot of the Regal Hotel. We were surprised that there was so much junk (mostly construction materials) scattered around the parking lot, little wonder that Regal is always perceived as a poorly run hotel group.

A nostalgic visit  Smile Mar 29, 2009

I visited this desert shop agian last week after many years of absence. The place has not changed at all, and everything seemed the same. The menu and the setting were exactly the same and I guess the owner never succumbed to the notion that change is part of business.

I tried the 桑寄生蓮子茶 for the first time after seeing so many good reviews about this on Openrice. In my many previous visits, I often had 合桃糊 or 杏仁露.

The egg was hard boiled and on first bite, there was a hint of smoke. The egg and the 蓮子 were complemented nicely by the 桑寄生茶, which was not too sweet and not too heavy. The dessert was served very hot in a soup bowl, filled to the brim. The bowl fit snugly on a metal saucer, which allowed the server to hold it without having to dip a finger into the soup to have a grip.

A very pleasant and nostalgic visit, and I would come back more often.

I went to 清真 by myself on a Saturday afternoon. There were already a few customers even though it was just past noon when i walked in.

Once again, i didn't need to look at the menu to know what i wanted to order as i had done my homework by looking at the reviews on Openrice. I ordered two pieces of the famous 牛肉餅, and a 咖哩羊腩.

咖哩羊腩 came quickly. The portion size was too much for one person. The 羊腩 was tender and tasty but the potatoes were still hard.

牛肉餅 were just great, very juicy and delicious.

The hygiene of this restaurant was way below par. The sight of a few pails of dirty dishes on the floor was nauseating.
