Pop Star:
After my friend and I had a drink, we saw a banner at Nathan Road introducing this restaurant. It said half price after 10 so we decided to try it out. It's located in a commercial building at Hillwood road. Stylish decor. Right next to a make up school. Not sure if it had something to do with it. True to its name, there were plenty of photographs with Hong Kong pop stars on the walls. Menu:
Around $15-20 each skewer. They also have some luxury items such as various types of seafood, Wagyu and goose liver...etc. I didn't check the menu for the private kitchen though, having said that, I thought I saw a few ladies having hotpot in a private room.
They had a comprehensive drinks list: Red, White, Beer, Champaign , Sake and Sochu.
These were what we've ordered:
Spicy Sze Chuan style black fungi: Very good. Nice and crunchy with a noticeable chili and garlic aftertaste. We enjoyed it a lot.
Razor clams: $52 each. Meaty and relatively fresh. Not bad at all.
Lamb chops: Two large pieces of decent lamb chops for HK$98. Very aromatic. I should have ordered medium though. These were slightly tough. Nevertheless, no complaints.
Chicken kidney : Quite tough. Jun around the corner is way better. Grilled pork bara with negi: Interesting combination. It's usually with chicken but this was good. Very aromatic. Crispy on the outside yet succulent. Kurobuta: This came as a slight disappointment. The taste of the pork was slightly off and it was not as tender as I had hoped it to be. Not recommended.
Grilled egg plant: Very good. A lot of crunchy fried garlic . Not too oily but very flavourful.
Tamanegi: Grilled onion. A simple ingredient but very hard to do well. The timing of this was good. Not easy to do well and in some case an acid test of the chef's skill. Grilled Taiwanese sausage: Very good. Fresh and crispy garlic slices went extremely well with it. Great with the special chili sauce and sesame sauce too .
Conclusion:
We had four bottles of beers.
The bill came down to HK$550 including service (there should be a 50% discount on the food but I wasn't sure about the drinks). The waitesses were very friendly and efficient. They constantly asked our opinion on how to improve.
We even got VIP card.
50% off after 10 and close at 2:00 am!
All in all, the quality of the food fared better than Chuan at TST. It's more spacious than Kan Pai or Jun.
A place I might return to time and again.
Worth a try.
