I had just come back from Korea a couple weeks ago where I had the chance to stuff myself with Kimchi but here I was in HK, craving the banchans and spicy food I had there.... so for lunch today I picked Myung Ga to satisfy this craving....

Banchans were served after ordering, and I have to say I really liked the salad with spicy dressing, the bean sprouts and spinach. The kimchi itself was not bad but not the best I've had so.... Another thing you might want to know is that these are all refillable - for free, which is, I wouldn't say rare, but not all Korean restaurants do free refills of banchans in HK so....

For lunch, Myung Ga does a very affordable lunch set. For myself, I chose:
"soondubu jjigae jeongsik" (i.e. soft tofu stew with pork) ($68)
In korea I had something similar, except with seafood. The tofu there was home-made so Myung Ga's could not match up in that respect. However, the tofu was still ender and took up the spicy stew very well. I just wish there were some sort of vegetables in here too, because the thin slices of pork belly wasn't particularly enjoyable texturally. This stew came with a bowl of rice which was honestly very poor. Whilst in Korea a stew like this was around HKD50, with a bowl of rice whose grains resembled Japanese pearl rice. Here, the rice grains were terrible...no granule was perfectly long or medium...and texturally it felt dry as if undercooked.....

P who joined me for lunch today went with
"bulgogi jeongsik" (i.e. braised beef with gravy set)
I did not try this, but P happily polished everything. The rice had the same issue but we didn't have any other option?

I'm not sure whether the rice at dinner is the same, but if it is, I don't think I'll be back. Rice pairing with these hearty stews and meat dishes is so important that poor rice just spoils the meal for me.... ! Thus, the "2" for taste below represents the meal I had as a whole...and if not for the poor rice it would easily be a "3".
