KiMOCHI:

There is always a huge queue outside this shop and my wife was eager to try this since she first arrived in Hong Kong. We came here for an early lunch on a weekend to mak sure we get seats. (Un)lucky for us, we got a table immediately.

Decor: The small wooden tables and wooden chairs were closely packed together. Typical HK, suburbs style Japanese eatery 10-15 years ago (Hong Kong has much improved since). Tacky decor. Not a place I'll recommend for a romantic date.

Ventilation was bad. We could smell the burnt smell of the stone pot containers coming from the gas stoves in the kitchen.
More about these stone pots later....

Menu:

Essentially udon or rice with pork, beef or chicken:

Ranged between HK$60-66.

Limited drinks selection: yuzu honey , lemon tea, hot & cold coffee and soft drinks.

We ordered their signature item, "Deluxe Pork Bone Udon in Hot Pot" and the "Grilled Chicken Don".

A large amount of uncooked sprouts unknown to me (according to other reviews, it's bean sprouts(?)). It has a very strong grassy taste.

The four large pieces of pork chunks felt like leftovers from double-boiled soup. To be fair, those were soft and easy to eat and rather filling.

Udon: Too soft and bland. Even those at Jika Udon is better. If you like udon, I suggest you try Imasuke at Tai Kok Tsui or Marugame at TST.

The whole point of using a stone pot is to maintain heat over a longer period of time after the food is taken away from the original heat source. In other words, the food is still cooking. This method is not recommended for easily overcooked food (seafood/steaks). Restaurants frequently get it wrong (even NOBU).

Imagine serving a bowl of ramen or even an instant noodle inside a stone pot. This will render all the noodles extremely soggy in no time. Not a very good idea.

Broth: Extremely strange. I could feel the use of concentrated soup cubes, I can't rule out the use of pork bones in the process though. Might even have some chicken soup in it. Very atypical Tonkotsu - not Chinese style and definitely not Japanese style. Very strange.

Even more strange with sweet corn and a raw egg added to the broth. I don't mind that - that's how I make my lunch sometimes if my wife is not at home.

I'm not very sensitive to MSG but I felt fairly thirsty afterwards.

The rice used was not Japanese rice. Not very good quality at all. It would have been better if they had used simple Jasmine rice instead.

Chicken pieces were dry and bland. The skin was crispy though.

The raw bean sprouts (?) were even worse in the rice than in my udon (at least the residual heat from my soup could cook it somewhat.)

You see a similar type of veggies in Japanese cuisine but that's called "kaiware daikon". It doesn't have the strong grass taste present like those we had here. Perhaps Mochi Cafe may wish to try that instead.

My wife was quite unhappy about this bowl of rice.

kiMOCHI warui:

HK$151 for two. Pricey for such quality.
Definitely not a restaurant that I would spend time queuing for.
If you are still curious, then I suppose the udon might be better than the rice.

Mochi cafe: Not recommended.

Other Info. : 很多人都知 「気持ち」的意思 「感覺(良好)/舒服」, 但「気持ち悪い」則指 「感覺不好」或「核突」。 For various reasons, most people in HK knows some Japanese vocabularies. "Kimochi”(気持ち) is one of those words . "Kimochi warui" (気持ち悪い) maybe less well known. It means "feeling bad" or "disgusting".
