I love Hutong! I've been there three times total, every time someone from abroad visits me. Maybe I like it so much because it is indeed Chinese food suitable for Westerners. I made a reservation two days in advance and was told that for the second shift, there were no window tables available. When I arrived, they gave us one nonetheless - like!
I am a bit bewildered that people find it so awful that they have two shifts. This is common practice with popular restaurants and if you don't want to be in a rush (btw, you have two full hours if you come at 6, that should be enough to have a massive feast right?!), you can choose the second shift, it's not a problem.
Every time I've had dumplings (all excellent and freshly made of course), twice the asparagus with sesame (very tasty but a bit small), two kinds of fish (cod and Mandarin fish), Szechuan fried chicken (great taste but too much chilli in too little chicken), boneless duck (excellent), and I don't remember more.
I love the food, sometimes portions are a bit small (especially for the price of some dishes) and sometimes I don't get the pricing policy - why is fish sooo much more expensive than meat? And the atmosphere just makes it. The toilet is quite an experience too.
