Barista Jam is a café with an attitude. On a Sunday afternoon, the upper floor of the 2-storey café was closed. When we entered, the place was almost full with some 8 diners. As we saw on a black board a few types of special coffees available that we were not familiar with, we asked one of the 5 baristas hiding behind the bar area what he would recommend. In a very blunt tone, he declined to give any advice as he didn’t know what our preference or acceptance level were. He recommended us to try only the ordinary one such as cappuccino first. I totally understood his ground but his attitude and the pride he carried on his face made me think I had offended him. Finally we ordered an Americano, a house brew and two pieces of cake. All the baristas behind the bar were chatting and paid very little attention to patrons. I am sure that some of them but not all are very knowledgeable about coffee. After we finished our first round of coffee, I decided to give a try to one of their specialties, a barista with a more reasonable sense asked what characters or flavours of coffee beans I preferred, this was the minimum type of service and hospitality I was looking for. Passion for coffee is one thing, but I believe hospitality and patience are also equally important for running a café.
a) House Brew ($30) – 8/10 The today’s brew was from they own blend of coffee denoted by “BJ Blend #7”.
b) Americano ($30) – 8.6/10 This Americano was with a thick crema, punchy and with a toasty note.
c) Special Brew – Ethopia Gedeo Worka Organic ($45) – 8.6/10 With good and interesting aroma, it was less acidic than I expected. It carried a towards salty taste that resembled the Chinese preserved bean curd (腐乳).
d) Forêt Noire – ($35) – 8.3/10 Only 3 types of cakes were served on the day and they’re from other supplier. Having said that, they were of high quality and with reasonable price. This black forest was with dark chocolate sponge cake, preserved cherries and top with layers of dark chocolate fold.
e) Choc Ganache – ($35) – 8/10 Chocloate and hazelnut hard mousse was layered in between slices of chocolate. To the right sweetness.
