Growing up my parents never sheltered me from going to ‘dirty’ restaurants outside so I’m used to visiting run down down places all over Hong Kong for food. Growing up my parents never sheltered me from going to ‘dirty’ restaurants outside so I’m used to visiting run down down places all over Hong Kong for food. However, in recent years I’ve started to become influenced by people around me who seem to have higher standards for hygiene so now I’m slightly pickier XD My philosophy is – if you’re making me sit at a..less than comfortable..restaurant the food better make up for the environment. Some people have a preference for beat-up, ghetto places since it’s “retro” and “classic”, but these things don’t appeal to me as I’m there for the food.
It was a rainy Sunday after church and I was in Sheung Wan looking for a place for a quick lunch. Unfortunately many places around that area don’t even open on Sundays so I didn’t have much choice. There seemed to be a famous small cha chang teng stall in the Sheung Wan Market so I decided to check it out.
I was there quite early (a little bit after 11) so there weren’t a lot of people there.

The boss was standing outside to greet customers as they sat down. He’s a smiley old grandpa who seems to make everyone’s day better

This place is famous for their cold milk tea which is served in soda bottles so they can be chilled without being diluted by ice. I didn’t feel like drinking anything cold though so I ordered a hot milk tea instead.

I was disappointed by this ‘famous’ milk tea. Perhaps I got the only cup that was off but it was super watery and all I could taste was the bitter tea. I prefer the milky, rich, “smooth” version of milk tea and a lot of other places can do better than this.
I also ordered a 餐蛋麵 Spam & Fried Egg on Instant Noodles. It took quite a while for this to get out from the kitchen, which I can forgive as I could picture an old person standing working and I wouldn’t want to rush a cute old person XD

There wasn’t anything special about this either. The soup was like water-ed down version of the regular Demae Ramen sesame oil soup base. They did at least pan fry the spam though.
So unfortunately for me the quality of the food wasn’t worth putting up with the less-than-hygienic environment. I feel bad for saying this because the owner and the people who work there are all very nice old people and maybe even they’re struggling to keep this business alive?! But yea, don’t think I’d pay another visit..
