I finally got to try 勝香園 this summer and have revisited it over over and over again since then! I even brought my Swiss friend here to let her experience a very local experience ... eating and sweating in the heat I got to say, they really deserve their place in Openrice. It's amazing how simple their food is, but also how well they make it. Really shows that places don't necessarily need creative, extensive, expensive menus. How great to find a place which can do small things and do it right. I
I got to say, they really deserve their place in Openrice. It's amazing how simple their food is, but also how well they make it. Really shows that places don't necessarily need creative, extensive, expensive menus. How great to find a place which can do small things and do it right.
I came a bit later than lunch hour, at almost 2PM and was worried that I'd have to wait in line. Thankfully, there weren't too many people and we got seats on a big table with other customers. I ordered the 蕃茄蛋腸麵. As I said, simple yet delicious! Most importantly, we got to talk about their soup. Even though I know they simply use canned tomato puree, the soup is very tasty and intensely-tomatoey. It was hot enough and serves as a perfect combination with noodles, especially 公仔麵. Regarding the noodles, I heard that they no longer use 出前一丁 and that it makes a big difference. Unfortunately, I've never tried this place before they changed and I cannot compare. Nonetheless, I felt their current noodles were decent - cooked to just the right texture, not too hard and not too soft. They were more towards the thin type, but tasted good. Next ... the egg, is just an egg. Again, cooked well - the yolk was still slightly runny and went well with the soup and noodles. Their 腸仔 was so good! Not sure what brand it was, but definitely the yummy kind of cheap chicken sausage. They fry it before they put it into the noodles, ensuring that the texture is good! My friends and I also ordered 脆脆s to share: 奶油脆脆 and 咖央脆脆! I loveee the texture of their bun so crunchy, warm and fresh ... but the inside stays so soft. Also have to praise them for the way they spread their 醬 - so evenly distributed, unlike some places when you usually find that the side of the buns have no sauce. That is not the case here! What they could do is maybe add a little more 醬 on their buns. My friends ordered a 2nd 奶油脆脆 because it was so good ... but they asked for additional 醬 which meant an additional $1. The restaurant itself ... nothing more than tables, chairs and some fans. Definitely the type of restaurant you would want to stay after having finished your food. You arrive, order, eat and leave. The chairs are hard, typical local wooden folding chairs. There is no air conditioning so imagine how hot it was to eat a hot bowl of noodles on a hot summers day with sunshine down your back! A true HKG experience to dine here! The service is the same, no more than what you need for a place like this. Foods came on time, they were the things we ordered, all I can ask for, in a place like this! No rude staff, all relatively friendly.
Overall, really admire this place for their ability to perfect the small things, which makes the different in their food. Lovely! One more thing is their pricing. With the reputation its gained and the amount of loyal and new customers they have, this place can easily increase their price by a lot. I'm not sure how much they use to charge, but it is still a very cheap dining option for the good food they serve. I understand that their 環境 is a problem, but I can guarantee that isn't a problem for those who dine here. Respect!
