As part of the Habitu group, I wasn't expecting the food here to be spectacular. But with a sister restaurant just upstairs called The Food "Academics" and a minimum spending (think it was around $80 per person...) that more or less insist you order food with your coffee, I didn't expect to be so disappointed with our lunch. We ordered a shrimp and peach salad, lobster bisque, chicken quesadillas. We ordered a shrimp and peach salad, lobster bisque, chicken quesadillas. Let me start with the salad -- for the $70-80 I paid, all I got was some romain lettuce, tasteless shrimps that obviously came from one of those frozen meat shops, canned peaches (seriously?!! if the salad was $20 and you give me the canned stuff, I won't complain...), and some yogurt dressing that had absolutely no flavour. It resembled something you might teach a child to make.
The lobster bisque, flavour wise, was okay but a bit thin and was not accompanied by any bread. The quesadillas was the most decent and came with curly fries that were crunchy and savoury. I also had a latte with Okinawan sugar, which was quite nice. It was served with a shot glass of water.
Coffee Academics should sort out what it wants to be and fix their menu offerings/prices accordingly. I would probably only return to have a coffee with a friend, maybe a late night dessert (didn't get to try their cakes but the ones at Caffe Habitu aren't that great) but nothing more.
