It was around 3:30 pm when I dropped in for a coffee. The place was half full, not too busy. When I was looking at the menu, I noticed the minimum charge of $70, which meant I had to order something to go with the coffee, or order two coffees, or be stupid and pay $70 for one cup of coffee. I ordered a capaccino and 5 pieces of sweets (macarons and chocolates). Sweets arrived first, followed by the coffee in couple minutes. Chocolates were good and macarons just so-so. The capaccino was disappointing - not hot enough and way too milky. It was a capaccino all about milk and little about coffee, as there was only a hint of coffee taste and aroma
. If I like milk more than I like coffee, I suppose I would have liked it, a lot. But then I would have just ordered steamed milk, not a capaccino.

The place is located at the corner of a narrow side street which was quite busy with plenty of left turn traffic when I was there. It also has a sort of road side balcony, with glass doors separating the indoor part of the place. However, the doors were wide open when I was there. A bad idea, I would say. The noise and gas fume from the cars outside filled the inside. To make things worse, the music was a little too loud (to mask the traffic noise?) All these negative aspects did not match the very nice decor, what a shame!

With the name Coffee Academics but a surprising minimum charge of a lot more than the price of a cup of coffee, I wonder if the place has it's focus on food or coffee? There is a bit of an identity ambiguity. But one thing is clear: for those coffee lovers who are not hungry and just want one cup of coffee, this may not be the place you want to go in.
