7/10Interesting Okinawa bar with al fresco seats.Worth a try if you are around the area.7/10I frequent restaurants under the En group a lot, especially En at TST. I have also attended two free tastings, one at Rakuen & another at En at this exact location. I came here with a colleague this time on my own initiative with the primary aim of securing the first comment on OpenRice if possible.  This was not a tasting event in any shape or form. The place was absolutely empty when we first arrived. We chose to sit at the alfresco area (good news for smokers) because we can get quite rowdy after a few drinks... En sakaba is essentially a slimmed down version of En, which serves primarily Okinawa cuisine such as the famous goyachampuru (stir fried bitter melon with hard Okinawa tofu & Agu pork) as well as sashimi and other grilled items. Sakaba literally means a bar. So I was expecting a large selection of Japanese booze and food to go with the booze. However, the drinks menu was not as impressive as I have hoped it to be. I was expecting a lot more sochu and sake, perhaps draft "Orion", the quintessential Okinawa beer. Without further ado, we each ordered a Mega sized Suntory Draft:In terms of food, as I have mentioned before, the menu is a slimmed down version of En. Since it brands itself as a bar, I was expecting a lot more otsumami (お摘み) (snacks to go with alcohol) than what was available. Nevertheless, it was still sufficient for our purposes. These were what we've ordered:Gyoyachampuru: Bitter melon from Okinawa is famous for one thing, that is, for not being bitter. And this is a signature Okinawa dish that uses bitter melon, Okinawa pork and Okinawa hard tofu in a stir fry. This was as good as always. Grilled Chicken Kidneys & Grilled Pork Belly: the size of the kidneys were quite large (you'd be surprised how small some could be). The timing could have been slightly improved as it could have been more succulent. On the other hand, the grilled pork belly was nice. The pork was well marinated and had pork taste. The timing was good too.The conversation was further fueled by two more glasses of house red which I heard was decent and two glasses of Kagoshima Imo sochu, which I recommend adding ice and cold water. The fried stuff that followed, namely the succulent Karaage (fried chicken nuggets), fried burdock and fried octopus were all pretty good. The fried octopus in particular was quite interesting. Wrapped in seaweed and in crunchy batter, it's not as rubbery as cuttlefish and pretty tasty. The fried burdock chips were different from other fried burdock chips that I've seen in that these were coated in a batter. It was a bit oily but very crunchy. Burdock is also supposed to be very good for one's stomach. The Okinawa garlic sausage platter also goes very well with all sorts of alcohol. Rich pork taste flavoured with hint of garlic. We were served by a Japanese manager who was very friendly and efficient. The bill came down to about $350 per person inclusive of all the drinks that we've had which I consider to be reasonable. Conclusion:All in all, even though I would have preferred the place to have a bigger snack selection and a more comprehensive list of Japanese alcohol, I still regard this as a good alternative to the bars in the area. Worth a try if you are around.7 out of 10 marks. continue reading
